tional magnetic resonance imaging. The study is in its fi-
nal stages, but its abstract has already been presented at
the World Congress of Neurology held in Hawaii, show-
ing significant differences between the two groups.
Three other studies occupy the researcher’s time at the
moment: the first, in partnership with Universidade Esta-
dual de Campinas (Unicamp), refers to the gut flora and
how it interferes in atherosclerosis. Its purpose is to answer
the question of whether wine could alter the gut flora and
consequently affect the levels of trimethylamine N-oxide
(TMAO). This is a chemical that facilitates the develop-
ment of experimental and human atherosclerosis. A sec-
ond study aims to discover the action of wine in coronary
atherosclerosis, following angioplasty; while a third study,
involving seniors over 80 years, aims to clarify the relation-
ship between grape juice and cognitive function.
These studies are part of the more than 400 scientific
papers produced by professor Protásio, of which 150 are
international articles and 50 are book chapters. A work rec-
ognized by the world medical community and now hon-
ored with the Fundação Conrado Wessel award, one of the
most important in the Brazilian medical community.
